USTA Texas - Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion, a strategic priority of USTA Texas, enforces our mission to ensure all who want to enjoy the sport of tennis—as players, spectators, advocates, staff, and volunteers—have the resources and tools to do so. USTA Texas programs and initiatives are designed to include diverse communities that reflect the demographics of current and future generations. We are committed to identifying and removing barriers to provide all with the opportunity to access and participate in tennis.

Engagement Guides

USTA Texas seeks to have our tennis communities reflect the changing demographics of our population. This includes ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, ability, gender, and socioeconomic background, to name a few. Below you will find seven engagement guides that target specific audiences.  These guides include strategies to recruit and retain diverse tennis players among these respective groups.

2017 Texas Diversity Grant

The Texas Diversity Grant provides players with financial assistance to prepare for and participate in tournament play. The grant is open to Texas players of all levels between the ages of 6-18. Grant awards range from $300-$1,000. Grant recipients serve as positive examples to their peers and as leaders in their communities.

The 2017 application process has closed. Applications for 2018 will be available in November.

2017 Diverse Events Grant

The Diverse Events Grant Program is designed to incentivize Community Tennis Associations and other local partners to reach diverse audiences in their community by promoting tennis at a local cultural event or festival of their choosing. Examples might include a Hispanic Heritage festival, Juneteenth celebration, or LGBT Pride event. 4 to 5 grants, up to $500 each, will be awarded. Deadline is on a rolling basis, as long as funds are available. Grant requests should be submitted two weeks prior to event date, at a minimum.

2017 Hispanic Engagement Grant

The Hispanic Engagement Grant program supports local efforts to attract new Hispanic individuals/groups to tennis, such as junior or adult players, volunteers, strategic partners, officials, coaches, or others identified by the grant seeker. Two grants ranging from $2,000-$3,000 will be awarded. Deadline is on a rolling basis, as long as funds are available.  Grant requests should be submitted two weeks prior to program start date, at a minimum.
Note: requests to support supplement aids (ball machines, tennis ball baskets), traditional tennis nets and windscreens, instructor stipends exceeding $30/hour, event decorations and entertainment, and one-day events without a follow-up plan are not supported.

2017 Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Grant

USTA Texas offers a matching grant, up to $7,500, to one Community Tennis Association for a Hispanic Outreach Coordinator. The Coordinator is a part of the CTA staff and will work closely with their respective USTA Texas Field Representative and USTA Texas Diversity & Inclusion staff. The Coordinator’s primary goal is to increase the awareness of tennis in the Hispanic community and transition these interested individuals into new/existing programming, volunteer roles, or other tennis activities as outlined by the CTA.

Growing the Game by Engaging Diverse Markets Toolkit

USTA National has developed a new 5-step online training to help local organizations engage and grow diverse markets in their communities. The training has a practical, hands-on approach that equips the user with how-to tools and resources.  USTA Texas will assist in in all aspects of coordinating the training, as well as provide follow-up support. It is open to any CTA, community-based organizations and partners, and individuals who are interested.
For questions on any of these opportunities, contact Marcos Valdez, Diversity & Inclusion Manager, at Valdez@texas.usta.com, or 512.443.1334, ext 220.

The USTA National office offers a variety of grants to help grow the game of tennis in many ways. A list of each grant and accompanying description can be found here. Contact grants@usta.com for further information and questions.
