HOUSTON – Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, No. 29 in the world, defeated fellow countryman Nicolas Almagro, No. 20 in the world, 6-3, 7-6 to claim his first singles title at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.  It was the first all-Spanish final in tournament history.

“It was a very close, tight match, we were both very tired...And it was a tough tiebreak, but I kept fighting,” said Verdasco, the new crowned champion in Houston.

Defeating Almagro, the runner up of last year’s singles U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, Verdasco became the first left-hander to win the title in Houston since Brazilian Fernando Meligeni in 1996.

“We both, in general, played good. I maybe took more chances than he took…He is a great player and I know I have to give 100 percent each point against him,” said Verdasco.

After being defeated with partner David Marrero by Bob and Mike Bryan in the doubles final on Saturday, he ended his six-match losing streak in ATP World Tour finals, Nice (2010), San Jose (2011), Estoril (2011), Gstaad (2011), Acapulco (2012) and Bastad (2013), by winning his first singles title since 2010.

The U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in 2015 will take place from April 6-12 at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston.
