Baradach, Washington, Adams' win US Open Texas titles

Men’s Singles

 

Baradach wins men’s singles at US Open Texas Sectional Qualifying Tournament

 
Former Southern Methodist University team member Artem Baradach won the men’s final of the 2011 US Open National Playoffs USTA Texas Sectional Qualifying Tournament when he defeated Juan Moreiras in a long three-set match 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, at the Arlington Tennis Center today.
 
With the win, Baradach advances to the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s Championship – Aug. 18-21, in New Haven, Conn., against the other 15 sectional winners in a single elimination tournament. The winner will receive a wild card entry to the US Open Qualifying Tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing, N.Y., Aug. 24-27.
 
Baradach, a Dallas native was an All-Conference USA Singles First Team and Doubles honors. He earned his second consecutive trip to the NCAA National Championships playing almost exclusively as the Mustangs No. 1 player. The computer science major transferred to SMU from Stony Brook.
 
Moreiras, a 17-year-old junior at Churchill High School in San Antonio battled Baradach to three sets.
 
 
Women’s Singles
 

Washington defeats Alba to secure women's US Open Texas qualifying title

 
Mashona Washington, younger sister MaliVai Washington, defeated Rosalia Alda 6-4, 7-5 to win the 2011 US Open National Playoffs USTA Texas Sectional Qualifying Tournament, held in Arlington and will advance as the Texas section representative at the US Open National Playoffs – Women’s Championship held Aug. 18-21.
 
Washington 35, now residing in Houston, began playing tennis at the age four. She won the juniors 1992 US Indoor National 18s, and turned professional in 1995. She was ranked as high as No. 50 in the world in 2004 and No. 55 in doubles in 2005, highlighted by reaching the third round at Wimbledon that year.
 
Saturday’s finals match up was Alda’s second consecutive year falling the finals of the US Open Texas sectional. The Round Rock native and former University of Tennessee player stretched the veteran Washington who had previously lost only three matches before facing Alba.
 
Mixed Doubles
 

Adams brother, sister combo wins US Open Texas sectional mixed doubles

 
In a three set thriller, Harrison and Samantha Adams advances to the US Open National Playoffs – Mixed Doubles Championship by defeating the team Lenka Broosova and Jordan Rux, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (7) to win the mixed doubles final at the 2011 US Open Texas Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Arlington.
 
The New Braunsfels natives won the State AAAAA Mixed Doubles title in 2010 and are headed to the playoffs at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., in August. They will face the other 15 sectional winners and the winner of the US Open National Playoffs mixed doubles receive a main draw wild card into the 2011 US Open.
 
Samantha is a sophomore at Texas Tech and her brother Harrison is a junior at New Braunsfels High School.
